Holy Comforter Book Group: Dr. Joseph Ewoodzie
August 11, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
On Friday, August 11, at 6:30 pm we welcome Dr. Joseph Ewoodzie, author of Getting Something to Eat in Jackson: Race, Class, and Food in the American South. Dr. Ewoodzie is associate professor of Sociology and the Vann Professor of Racial Justice at Davidson College. His book, Getting Something to Eat in Jackson, is an award-winning ethnography recognized with the Ida B. Wells-Barnett Book Award and the C. Wright Mills Award.
“Getting Something to Eat in Jackson uses food – what people eat and how – to explore the interaction of race and class in the lives of African Americans in the contemporary urban South. Dr. Ewoodzie examines how ‘foodways’ – food availability, choice, and consumption – vary greatly between classes of African Americans in Jackson, Mississippi, and how this reflects and shapes their very different experiences of a shared racial identity.” (Princeton University Press)
Our format will welcome the partners, friends, and neighbors we hope you will bring. We will have a wonderful dinner, with a menu in keeping with the book’s themes and a presentation by Dr. Ewoodzie followed by questions and answers. Books are still available at Holy Comforter (or email me for delivery). Child care is available and requires registration by Wednesday, August 9, by 5:00 pm. Everything is free, thanks to support from the John M. Belk Endowment.
I urge you to share this email and its link to Eventbrite, register soon, and extend a personal invitation to others.
Dr. Ewoodzie’s presentation will begin a series of gatherings and experiences focused on foodways and their relationship to socioeconomic mobility. We welcome your ideas and expect your engagement. We remember well Bryan Stephenson’s advice: get proximate.
