On Saturday, July 15, The Rev. Kevin S. Brown was elected on the fifth ballot to serve as the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Delaware.
A Note from the Senior Warden,
This past Monday, the Vestry met with Sam Rodman, our new bishop, and the Canon for Transition. We had the unique opportunity to hear about transition from the perspective of a priest (now bishop) who was ordained on the very same day in July that our own Fr. Kevin was elected as Bishop of Delaware. I think I can speak for the entire Vestry when I say that we left that meeting with a feeling of joy and excitement, for both the Brown family and Holy Comforter, as well as a sense of comfort in a well-established transition process and the work we will continue to do as we move through it together.
More information will follow, but in the meantime, I wanted to share this unexpected and lovely letter to us all from the Diocese of Delaware.
Transition Update: Save the Date
Father Kevin’s final Sunday at Holy Comforter will be Sunday, September 10. On that date, he will celebrate and preach at both the 8:00 a.m. and a bilingual 10:30 a.m. service. Following the 10:30 a.m. service, we’ll come together for a farewell reception for the Brown family.
Here are some words about Fr. Kevin's election from the Rt. Rev. Sam Rodman and the diocese of North Carolina:
The Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina offers congratulations and blessings to the Rev. Kevin Brown, rector of Holy Comforter, Charlotte, upon the announcement of his election as the 11th Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware.
Brown was elected on the fifth ballot on July 15.
The Rt. Rev. Sam Rodman, bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina and consecrated the same day as Brown's election, said, "In the short time I have come to know Kevin, I have seen his deep commitment to the gospel and his innovative leadership in developing models for mission that connect and engage the community. Kevin has both the temperament of a pastor and the keen organizational perspective that can help lead the church into the 21st century.
We will miss Kevin here as a colleague and friend, but we are glad he will be sharing his considerable gifts and prayerful presence with the Diocese of Delaware and the wider church.
We will be keeping Kevin and his family, and the parish of the Holy Comforter in our prayers during this transition."
Brown will be ordained and consecrated December 9, 2017 at Dover State University in Dover, Delaware.

Our Senior Warden's Saturday email to the parish:
Today, the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware held its Special Convention to elect their next bishop. I would like to congratulate Father Kevin on the honor of being elected as the 11th Bishop of Delaware.
While we all share Kevin and Caroline's joy as they enter into this wonderful new phase of his ministry, it is completely natural to wonder: "What comes next for Holy Comforter?" The good news is that our diocese has a strong and proven transition process in place that we will follow, step-by-step, over the coming months. I will contact the Cannon to the Ordinary to initiate the process next week.
Right now, let's take the time to congratulate Kevin for this honor, which he continues to characterize as a true reflection of the wonderful ministry that we have shared together here at Holy Comforter. I invite you to Patrick Pope's excellent class on Bach tomorrow at 9:15 a.m. At the end of that class, Kevin and I will offer brief comments about next steps. It will probably be a couple of weeks before I have more detailed information to offer, but until then, please know that I am well supported by the Vestry, the personnel committee, and our staff.
I am confident in the Spirit's guidance and a bright future for Holy Comforter and the Episcopal Church.
Melissa Siler, Senior Warden
Fr. Kevin's email Saturday email to the parish:
Earlier today I was elected, God willing, to serve as the eleventh bishop of the Diocese of Delaware. It is, as you might imagine, a calling both inspiring and humbling.
The feeling of excitement and new possibilities is very much what I felt seven years ago when I learned that the Vestry of Holy Comforter had called me to serve as their tenth rector. I was inspired and humbled then, and these years have been a profound gift to me and to my family. I cannot begin to measure how much this parish means to me.
The reality of my election is only a few hours old, and it will be a little while--probably a couple of weeks--before I know for sure what my timeline will be for heading to Delaware. This is all new to me! I promise to keep you posted.
For tonight, I hope you will join with me in taking a deep breath and, once again, calling on the Holy Spirit to guide us forward. Please pray with me in thanksgiving for the gift of our parish in our lives and our city.
