Back to School!
The college kids are off, and the younger ones are not far behind. Other than lunchboxes, clothes, and backpacks (and blessing them!), what can we do to help them thrive this school year? These are our areas of greatest need:
Imagine what it would be like if you found yourself stranded in China, but you didn’t speak Chinese. Who would help you, “a stranger in a strange land?” Could you offer some of your Wednesday evenings to teach English as a Second Language? The only requirements are that you speak English and have a willing heart. Childcare help is also needed. Contact Lauren Cavins at 704.332.4171 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
For college students:
Do you remember the choices open to you when you left home? There are even more now, and college students can use some solid connections. Just One Thing puts college students in contact with the campus ministry at his or her college (http://tinyurl.com/ngbtuz2). For local students, Cooperative Christian Ministries offers vital connections to friends, service, community, and faith through a variety of activities. Contact Beth Hardin at 704.687.5750 or email@example.com.
For K-12 students:
There are so many things you can do. Link your grocery store card to a school; donate supplies; help fund worthy projects through Donor’s Choose (www.donorschoose.org); provide school uniforms for homeless children through Community Supportive Housing (www.csh.org). One of our greatest local needs involves tutoring children whose parents can’t speak English. If you have the gift of teaching and would like to help, contact Susanne Shaw at 704.962.1527 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
For the youngest children:
We nurture the youngest, from ages 1 to 4 years, at La Escuelita Weekday School. These are formative years and there are many ways to help: link your grocery card to our school (VIC:3065); donate supplies, funds, or books in English or in Spanish; or sponsor part of a child’s tuition. Contact Lauren Cavins at 704.332.4171 or email@example.com.
For all of them:
Pray for them, their families, their teachers and leaders, the administrators and organizers, and all who touch their lives and help them grow…and visit the kiosk and bulletin board for more information.
Each Sunday this summer during the 10:30 a.m. service, children will follow the small brown wooden cross to our beautiful children’s chapel. One Sunday each month, our chapel will be led by clergy; the other Sundays, we would like to invite volunteers to participate with this ministry. We will supply the materials you need to lead or assist in our chapel. All you need bring is yourself and your love for helping to nurture children’s connections with God. To sign up, visit this link. For information, contact Lauren at firstname.lastname@example.org.
HCPC – Holy Comforter Parents Connect – Parents interested in exploring and discussing raising children of faith in a spiritual community plan to gather to support and enrich each other’s lives through intentional discussion about how we as a community will raise children with a strong Christian foundation. During the programming year (September - May) HCPC will meet on the second and fourth Sundays of the month during The Hour in Room 205. For more information, contact Lauren Cavins or Jennifer Everhart.
Live It! This Summer!
Live It! is a resource designed to offer families something short and simple that they can actually DO in the midst of today's busy lifestyles. Formed around key words (trust, gratitude, kindness, etc.), each table card provides a quote, a sentence prayer, a sharing suggestion and a Scripture lesson to help you grow. Each key word has four cards that you can (a different card for each week of the month), and we are providing them for Holy Comforter families to use over the summer months. Put them any place where your family can see and easily use them – and then choose to Live It! this summer!
